Can strategy games really work on a phone?

April 15, 2026 · Lukas Feldmann

Strategy games have always felt like they belong on a big screen with a mouse. So I was skeptical that a deep tactics game could survive the jump to a phone. Ironhold Tactics mostly convinced me it can, with some caveats.

The games that work keep their grids readable and their inputs forgiving. Tap to select, tap to move, and crucially let you undo before you commit. Nothing kills a tactics game faster than a fat-fingered move you can't take back.

Screen size is the real limit. On a phone, Ironhold's UI feels cramped during big battles, and I kept zooming in and out. On a tablet the same game is a joy. If you're serious about mobile strategy, a larger screen genuinely changes the experience.

My take: the genre absolutely works on mobile, but pick your device wisely and give yourself a quiet moment to play. These games want your full attention, and they reward it.
